Plainchant Workshop- full, applications closed
Saturday 12th March
Time 2.30-7pm
Peter Stevens, Assistant Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral and Director of the Edington Festival Schola, opens our 2022 season with a half-day workshop on the under-appreciated delights of plainchant, in the purpose-built acoustic of Edington Priory Church. Peter is one of the country’s most knowledgeable and enthusiastic practitioners of this precursor of modern musical notation. He will give us some history of plainchant, explaining how it works, and leading us through some chants to enable us to sing Compline in the Priory Church as our finale. As the chants for Compline are relatively straightforward, he will probably bring along something a little more developed as well for us to get our teeth into. This is probably the only choral workshop where you don’t need to be able to read a score!
Music will be provided, and we are hoping that some of the Festival Schola will also join us to add some practical support to those of us for whom this may be a first foray into new territory.
