The Metamorphoses Trio

Saturday 2nd April

Time 7.30pm

We’re delighted that the Metamorphoses Trio, whose concert for us in 2020 fell victim to Covid, will be playing for us very soon, in April.

This is an interesting combination of instruments – piano, clarinet and viola – in an ensemble founded in 2016 by three world-class established soloists, Crimean-born/Spanish resident Ilona Timchenko, (piano), (Jean Johnson, USA, clarinet), and Roeland Jagers, (Netherlands, viola). As well as recording and performing together as a trio, each has an independent musical career, Jean playing as a duo with her husband pianist Steven Osborne, Roeland as a passionate chamber musician playing in ensembles all over the world, and multiple prize winner Ilona as artistic leader of the Peregrinos Musicales Festival in Santiago de Compostella, Spain.

You may be interested in a video they recorded for YouTube last year which illustrates their multicultural approach and the overarching power of music.  Click here to watch.

Their programme represents a unique opportunity to explore music written for this instrumental line-up, from Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio through Bruch and the wonderfully tuneful Julius Rontgen (follow the link below to hear an excerpt) to an incredibly virtuosic and jazzy piece by the French twentieth century composer Jean Francaix.   As huge supporters of contemporary music, they are also including a piece by the Dutch composer Theo Loevendie which was written specially for them, and which was to have had its UK premiere at Edington in 2020.  Their performances are “sincere, imaginative and as fresh as paint” according to Gramophone magazine; book your tickets now and see what you think on April 2nd!
