Choral Workshop

Saturday 26th June

Time 10am-4.30pm

At long last, singing is coming back. The Edington Arts Choral Workshop will take place on Saturday 26th June, lead by Jeremy Summerly, Director of the Edington Music Festival Consort, and one of the most respected and well known choral directors in the UK.  He also has the distinction of having conducted choirs in Palestine …… “One moment I’m live on Radio 3; 14 hours later I’m with a girls choir deep in the West Bank; their English was a weak as my Arabic! In 2016 I did it the other way round: I left Bethlehem in the morning, and 16 hours later I was conducting the first Compline of the Festival.”

We will be getting to grips with two pieces from the English Choral repertoire, very different in style; Britten’s melodic, rhythmic and mystical ‘Rejoice in the Lamb’ and Elgar’s ‘Great is the Lord’, (which incidentally is paradise for altos.)  Neither work is very long, 25 minutes and 10 minutes approximately, including solos, so we will have time to absorb Jeremy’s advice and encouragement, remember how to sing, how to breathe(!) and most importantly, to ENJOY.

With a line-up of four outstanding young soloists, and our friend Chris Totney (Director of Music at St John’s Devizes) providing accompaniment on both piano and organ, we will be in for a great day.
